Sump Pump Installation
The storm that floods your basement is the same storm that cuts your power. A sump pump without a backup is protection that switches off exactly when you need it.
Pump replacement to full system installs
What you get
- Correctly sized pump matched to your basement's actual water volume
- Sealed basin, controls humidity, odour, and radon entry
- Battery backup that runs for hours without grid power
- Discharge routed well away from the foundation so water does not return
What a sump pump actually does
A sump pump does not waterproof anything. It is the discharge end of a drainage system: the part that takes water your weeping tile has already collected and moves it out of the building.
That distinction matters, because a pump installed without a drainage system feeding it will sit in a hole doing very little while water continues to enter elsewhere. When someone offers to fix a wet basement by dropping in a pump, they are treating a symptom.
Installed as part of a properly built system, though, it is the component your dry basement depends on most, and it is the one most likely to fail.
The details that decide whether it works
A sealed basin, not an open pit. An open sump is an evaporating pool of groundwater in your basement, and it is a leading cause of the musty smell homeowners blame on their walls. In parts of Nova Scotia with elevated radon it is also a direct soil-gas entry point into your living space. A sealed lid with a gasketed pump access and a proper vent costs very little more.
A check valve on the discharge. Without one, every time the pump shuts off, the column of water sitting in the discharge pipe runs straight back into the basin. The pump refills, restarts, and pushes the same water up again. It short-cycles, it wastes its service life, and it never actually gets ahead.
Freeze relief on exterior discharge. In an Atlantic winter, the exposed end of a discharge line can freeze closed. If it does, the pump dead-heads. It runs against a solid block of ice until the motor burns out, and then your basement floods. A relief fitting gives the water somewhere to escape near the house if the main line is blocked. It is a small part that prevents a total system failure.
Discharge that actually leaves. A line that dumps three feet from the foundation puts the water straight back into the saturated soil your drainage system is trying to relieve. The pump then removes it again. We route the discharge far enough away, downgrade, that it drains off for good.
Battery backup is not an upsell
Consider the sequence in a typical Nova Scotia storm event. A post-tropical system arrives, drops 80 to 150 mm of rain over several hours, saturates the soil, and drives the water table up. At the same time, wind brings down limbs and the power goes out, sometimes for a day or more.
Your basement is now taking on the most water it will see all year, and your pump has no electricity.
A battery backup system is a second pump, mounted above the primary on its own float switch, wired to a deep-cycle battery kept on a maintainer. When the primary loses power or fails, the backup starts automatically. Most units will run for several hours of intermittent cycling, and the alarm tells you it has engaged.
If you install one thing beyond the basics, install this.
Replacing an existing pump
If your pump is more than about eight years old, is noisy, cycles constantly, or you simply do not know how old it is, it is worth having looked at. Replacement is a straightforward visit. We will also check the check valve, the float travel, the basin seal, and the discharge routing while we are there, because those four things cause more basement floods than pump failure itself.

Questions
About sump pump installation
How long does a sump pump last?
Seven to ten years is typical for a quality cast-iron pump, less for a plastic big-box unit and less again in a basement that cycles heavily. Pumps rarely give warning before they fail. If yours is approaching ten years, replacing it on your schedule for a known price is far cheaper than replacing it at 2am during a nor'easter with four inches of water on the floor.
Do I really need a battery backup?
In Nova Scotia, yes. Our flooding events are driven by post-tropical storms and nor'easters, which are also our main cause of extended power outages. A primary pump on grid power is offline for precisely the hours you most need it running. A battery backup is a second pump on its own float switch and deep-cycle battery. It takes over automatically and will typically run through a multi-hour outage. It is the single highest-value add-on in basement waterproofing.
What size sump pump do I need?
Sizing is about how much water your basin receives and how high and far the pump must push it, not about horsepower on the box. A 1/3 HP pump moving water eight feet up and thirty feet out delivers far less flow than the same pump moving it four feet up. We calculate total dynamic head against the pump's actual performance curve. Oversizing is a real problem too: a pump that empties the basin in two seconds short-cycles and burns out its motor early.
Why does my sump pump run constantly?
Common causes are a basin that is too small for the inflow, a float set too low, a failed check valve letting discharged water run straight back down into the basin, or a genuinely high water table. The check valve is the one most often overlooked and the cheapest to fix. We can diagnose it in one visit.
Can I discharge into my sanitary sewer or floor drain?
No. It is prohibited under most Nova Scotia municipal bylaws including HRM, because storm water in the sanitary system overloads treatment plants and causes sewer backups into other homes. It can also expose you to a fine. Discharge belongs on grade, well away from the foundation, or into a dedicated drywell.

Should You Waterproof Your Basement in Winter? Usually, Yes
Interior waterproofing carries on through a Nova Scotia winter, and booking it then means you are dry before spring melt, with a far better spot in the schedule.
Why Your Sump Pump Needs Attention During a Dry Spell
A pump that sits unused for months is more likely to fail when it is finally needed. A short seasonal check that takes fifteen minutes and prevents a flood.
