Basement waterproofing in Halifax

Halifax has two distinct basement problems, and which one you have depends almost entirely on when your house was built.

Peninsula homes (the North End, the South End, the West End) are largely pre-war, and a great many sit on stone or rubble foundations with no drainage of any kind. Slate bedrock sits close to the surface across much of the peninsula, so water moving through the thin soil above it travels laterally along the rock until it meets your foundation. Stone foundations do not crack the way poured walls do; they weep through mortar joints along their entire length. The fix is rarely injection. It is usually repointing, appropriate parging, and getting the water away from the wall in the first place.

Post-war suburbs (Clayton Park, Fairview, Rockingham, Spryfield) are mostly poured concrete or block on glacial till. Till is dense and drains slowly, which means water sits against the wall for days after a storm instead of moving through. These are the homes where interior perimeter drainage does the most work, because the pressure under the slab is what pushes water up at the floor-wall joint.

The peninsula’s density adds a practical constraint: on many lots, exterior excavation is genuinely impossible. Property lines are tight, structures sit close together, and mature trees are not negotiable. Interior systems exist precisely for these situations, and they achieve the same dry basement by a different route.
