Why New Glasgow basements get wet

Pictou County’s towns (New Glasgow, Stellarton, Westville, Trenton) grew around coal and industry, and that history is still under the houses.

Much of the older housing stock sits on previously disturbed ground: former industrial land, fill, and areas affected by historic mining activity. Disturbed and filled ground settles unevenly, and differential settlement is a leading cause of the structural cracking we see in older foundations here. These are frequently cracks that need mechanical reinforcement rather than sealing alone.

The East River runs through New Glasgow and Trenton and influences water tables in the neighbourhoods along it. Clay-heavy soils across the county drain slowly, keeping saturated ground against foundations well after a storm has passed.

The age of the housing stock matters as much as anything. A large share of homes here predate any expectation of foundation drainage, and many have stone or rubble foundations requiring a fundamentally different approach than a poured wall, repointing, parging, and surface water management rather than crack injection.

We cover Pictou County on regular scheduled routing rather than as an occasional trip, so assessments here are not treated as a favour.
